The North Montrose Civic Association Community Garden volunteers grow food to donate to Loaves and Fishes, a downtown soup kitchen which provides 300 meals a day for homeless men and women. Although this is a garden of eight 25’ beds, we produce over 1000 pounds of fresh produce during all four growing seasons.

Typically we grow tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet and hot peppers, squash, peas, beans, okra, kale, collard greens, chard, bok choy, beets, carrots, lettuce and a variety of herbs. Volunteers are welcome and do not have to belong to the civic association. Of course, gardeners can share in the food we grow.

We follow organic growing practices and make all of our own compost for soil amendment. The garden is an Urban Harvest affiliate and is located in the middle of a residential Montrose neighborhood, providing a valuable green space where so few exist.

Although there is not a scheduled workday, we often get together on Saturday mornings. Interested volunteers are invited to share in our effort to grow healthy food for those who most need it and at the same time, enjoy the fun of vegetable gardening, whether experienced or just learning.
