River Oaks Elementary was one of the first schools in Houston to develop a comprehensive outdoor classroom. In the early nineties, Margaret Hansen, Meredith Smith, and many others developed an amazing wildscape, which is an outstanding educational aid. Anyone who has watched the kids walking and crawling about with clipboards making observations and drawing pictures, cannot fail to be impressed and convinced of the value as a learning tool. Over the years, River Oaks has added a pond, an orchard, and a vegetable garden.
