For Vietnamese Americans, their home gardens are healing and nurturing green spaces replete with fresh, accessible, and affordable herbs, vegetables, and fruits. Consequently, they maintain some sovereignty over their diet and food consumption. By raising food gardens of their own, Vietnamese Americans create a homeland duality, where they not only gain a greater sense of belonging here in the United States, but they also remain rooted to their Vietnam of the past.  This class will teach all about the scents, tastes and traditions that live on in Vietnamese home gardens!  

Carol Burton will share her top 5 Vietnamese herbs to grow right now in your kitchen garden, for your Houston area spring and summer gardens. 

PRESENTER
Roy Vũ earned his Ph.D. (2006) in history at the University of Houston.  He is now a history professor at Dallas College, in Irving, Texas.  He also serves as an Advisory Board member for Plant It Forward Farms and Foodways Texas.  He is currently writing a book entitled Farm-to-Freedom: Vietnamese Americans and Their Home Gardens, under contract for publication with Texas A&M University Press (forthcoming).  He and his wife, Ngọc, reside in Irving, Texas.
