Sustainable Living Through Permaculture 1 & 2 are prerequisites for this module.   

In a world of climate change threats and unstable oil producing regions, it is essential that our homes and communities change to become more energy efficient. This course helps us get there. Designing Our Green Homes and Communities is one of five modules in the permaculture design certificate course, and is open to anyone who has completed Module 1: Sustainable Living Through Permaculture Classes 1 and 2. No city planning, engineering or architectural knowledge is required. 

Sundays 1:00 – 5:00PM, with the exception of all day field-trip 10:00am-5:00pm

COMMUNITY PARTNER SITE:    

The Japhet Transition Community (previously the Japhet Subdivision) has a rich history dating back to 1891 – and its modern start began in 1986 with Jim Ohmart and Eileen Hatcher. The couple began purchasing, remodeling and renting out 11 of the homes that were located in the neighborhood. It is located 3 miles from the Harris County Court House, in the 5th Ward area of Houston, just north of the Buffalo Bayou. Japhet Creek runs through the community.    

The Japhet Community includes a community classroom for shared learning and has been a previous location for Permaculture classes and modules with Urban Harvest and Montessori schools.
