Join for an informative, hands-on and fun urban composting class with Moonshot Compost and horticulturist Phillippa Johnstone! You will learn the basics of why to divert your food waste, how to compost in the garden, using a bin and how to composting at home.
Compost Demo: Whether you're completely new, or seeking advice and tips for your current compost system, this class will provide you with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and broaden your understanding behind the science and art of composting. We will walk through successful composting techniques to use anywhere from small kitchen waste and backyard composters to large garden piles. We will go over key composting do's and don'ts so that you will be able to maintain your compost year-round. We will also take a look into what's inside compost and dive into the microbial life that gives life to your soil.

Chris Woods and Team from Moonshot Compost, a local Houston composting and full-service home compost pick up company. www.moonshotcompost.com
Philippa holds her degree in sustainable development and is certified in permaculture design. She sits on the board of Beauty's Community Garden, where she helps maintain a small urban farm to produce organic produce for the surrounding community. Her previous experience in native and edible landscaping has fueled her interest in soil health and restoration. She currently works at Memorial Park Conservancy as a conservation horticulturist coordinator. She is excited to bring her experiences into this class in order to help guide others in the sustainable, ecologically centered practice of composting. Website: https://beautyscommunitygarden.org
LOCATION
The Urban Harvest teaching garden was created in 2019 and underwritten by the generous support of Green Mountain Energy Sun Club Foundation. The garden irrigation is from a water catchment tank installed by Texas Metal Tanks and powered by solar panels.
If you cannot attend a live class, there are no substitutions or refunds.
