GROW AND CRAFT: Jute Basket with Urban Harvest

This is a garden and craft partnership for a kid and family drop-in activity at the Houston Contemporary Craft Center!  

Learn about Jute, an ancient fiber used for weaving cloth, baskets and rope. It is also known as Egyptian spinach or molokhia and makes a great summer edible green because the leaves are eaten like spinach. It is a heat-loving crop and easy to grow! Children will be able to plant Jute seeds to start their own plant in a basket that they weave and craft themselves.  

This workshop is a drop-in make and take workshop which will be running from 10:00 am –1:00 pm.  Class will be hosted in the beautiful craft garden where many plants used in making fibers are growing, such as, cotton, papyrus and more.  

This workshop is one day of a week-long offering of kid and family friendly Spring Break activity at the Houston Contemporary Craft Center. 

Hands-on activities require about 25 minutes to be completed. Activities will take place outdoors (weather permitting) and are on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. Families and children ages three and up are welcome to participate. Materials are provided, and teaching artists and volunteers provide step-by-step instructions.

Houston Center for Contemporary Craft is located in the Houston Museum District, two blocks south of Highway 59, near Rosedale St., and between the Wheeler Transit Center and the Museum District MetroRail stops. 

Visitors are encouraged to park in our free parking lot, located directly behind the building, next to the Craft Garden, off Rosedale and Travis Streets. Visitors should not park in the TSO parking lot on Main St.
