This class covers everything you want to know about growing vegetables organically. Topics include the advantages of organic and ecological approaches over chemicals; vegetable garden design; irrigation and drainage; soil fertility, mulches and composts; organic pest control; seeds, transplants, where to get them and how to plant them and detailed discussion of selecting, growing and using the many varieties of vegetables, annual herbs, and melons. Detailed instructions in cultivating, as well, as planting and transplanting schedules appropriate to different Southeast Texas locations are taught in this course. 

Those who complete this 25-hour class series will become certified as Organic Vegetable Specialists. This is a series of ten classes and may not be taken individually.

INCLUDED: 

  •  Two optional, in-person field trips to visit organic backyard gardens and the Urban Harvest teaching garden on two Saturday dates in early spring. Dates to be announced.  
  • Online community participants will receive an invite to a Growing Organic Vegetables (GOV) private Facebook group for Class sharing peer to peer. The GOV FB group will be active for one year.

PRESENTERS: Bob Randall, Ph.D is the main presenter and coordinator of this 10-part series. Other expert presenters include Gary Edmondson, Ray Sher and special guests.  

Bob is the author of the best-selling local gardening book: Year Round Food Gardening for Houston and Southeast Texas. He was one of the eight founders of Urban Harvest in 1994 and was Executive Director from its beginning until he retired after 21 years of leadership (including Urban Harvest’s predecessor at the Interfaith Hunger Coalition) in early 2008. As such, Bob has played a major local and national role in the development of area community gardens, school gardens, farmers’ markets, organic gardening classes, and organic landscaping.  

 There are no refunds or substitutions if you cannot attend a live class for which you signed up. As available, class recordings will be sent out after the class.
