This lecture series covers everything you want to know about growing vegetables organically. Topics include the advantages of organic and ecological approaches over chemicals; vegetable garden design; irrigation and drainage; soil fertility, mulches and composts; organic pest control; seeds, transplants, where to get them and how to plant them. The last half is a detailed discussion of selecting, growing and using the many varieties of vegetables, annual herbs, and melons.
Those who complete this 25 hour class series will become certified Organic Vegetable Specialists. This is a series of ten classes and may not be taken individually. Assignments for the class include the reading of Dr. Bob Randall's book, Year-Round Food Gardening for Houston and Southeast Texas. Cost of the book is $55, no tax.

UH Building Map: Charles McElhinney Hall: Building: Approx. the 3700 Block of Cullen Avenue/Parking is in Lot 9C on Wheeler, off of Cullen. NOTE Charles McElhinney Hall on the campus map is between entrances 13 & 14, [click on the map, roll in for a closer look and the building will appear on the map. Move the map around by holding down the mouse left key] Allow at least 10 minutes walking time, so please arrive early · From the north or downtown, take I-45 South, exit Cullen, turn right/south, enter University of Houston central campus, go through lights at Elgin, Holman, UH entrance 14, UH entrance 13-Cougar Village. Turn left at the next light at Wheeler Ave. · From the south take I-45 North, exit Elgin-Lockwood/Cullen Blvd, follow the signs closely (it can get confusing) to Cullen and turn left under the freeway, enter University of Houston central campus, go through lights at Elgin, Holman, UH entrance 14, UH entrance 13-Cougar Place. Turn left at the next light at Wheeler Ave. After turning left onto Wheeler from Cullen, turn right into the first driveway. This is Lot 9C, park on the left side of the driveway. We have permission to park in this lot although the lot parking signs says a permit is required. Do not park in reserved spaces and do not park immediately behind the building on the corner of Wheeler.
